How does bill of materials software work?
Bill of Materials (BOM) software works by creating detailed lists of all components, materials, and sub-assemblies needed to manufacture a product, including quantities and specifications.
Batch Tracking / Lot Tracking
Build finished products quickly and easily with PlanIT Assemblies that let you capture all the costs of production for better planning more accurate margin reporting.
Disassembly
Time spent manually breaking down assemblies into components is a hidden cost you can’t account for. PlanIT ensures you can automatically disassemble goods after purchase or return.

Bill of materialst Software FAQs
Questions we get asked the most about PlanIT’s Bill of Materials (BOM) software
Is it possible to have never diminishing products inside a Bill of Materials?
Yes! To do so, simply add a product into PlanIT, ensuring that ‘Never Diminishing’ and ‘Component Product’ are switched on. This will allow you to search for your Never Diminishing product when creating your Bill of Materials. Watch a tutorial on how to add never diminishing products to BOM.
Is it possible to have multi-layered assemblies, that is, a Bill of Materials inside a Bill of Materials?
This can currently be managed in PlanIT using a manual approach, by assembling the first level manually, followed by the second level, then the third – all depending on how many product Bill of Material levels you have.
Can PlanIT deal with kitted product inventory manufacturing?
Yes, definitely. And it’s essential for improving efficiency. Utilising material kits enables workers to complete manufacturing tasks more quickly and efficiently. By separating the component-gathering process into a distinct job, each worker can concentrate on a single task. Comprehensive kits ensure that assembly workers have all the necessary tools and parts to complete the manufacturing process.
How does BOM software support regulatory compliance?
BOM software can help ensure regulatory compliance by maintaining detailed records of all components used in production, including material specifications and sourcing information. This is essential for industries with strict regulatory requirements.
How to create a bill of materials?
A Bill of Materials (BOM) lists all the components, parts, and raw materials needed to assemble a finished product. To create one, define the finished product, then list each component with quantities and any expected wastage. For a step-by-step example, check out our guide on creating a bill of materials.
What does a BOM typically include?
There are multiple ways to do this. One way is to use the PlanIT stock-on-hand enquiry report. You can also use an item inquiry report to gain an understanding of stock availability data. Stock can be reserved for a sales order or a manufacturing process – and PlanIT gives you the necessary insight into how much stock is available.
